In the dead of night

The rain fells gently on the city below, it residence seemed not to notice, they were used to the never ending rain and the thick fog that fallowed. Perched on top one of the tallest building sat a woman, still and unmoving, like some gothic statue, watching the world pass below her with cold amber eyes. Her raven hair was tossed about in the wind and she didn't blink as the cold rain pelted her ivory skin.

...

He walked quickly through the rain, in his arms was a ancient book, wrapped in plastic to protect it from the perpetual rain that soaked the city. Quietly the skinny man murmured to himself in words that were not of any human language. His eyes were always darting around, never resting on only one thing. Despite his apparent youth, his hair was that silvery white of old age, the color that the young only get from an experience that would drive most mad.

The woman's eyes fix apon the strange for of the man. She smiles as the strange language reatches her preturnatural ears. In all her years of hunting this city, never had she come apon a man as strange as this. She smiles, this one maybe worth watching. Silently she stood and stepped off the building, landing smoothly and silently in the alley just as the man walked past. She croutched low, bending the very shadows around her like a cloak.

He knew of the strange things

He knew of the strange things that stalked through the night, he knew them well. His newest book discussed many of the maddening things that creep, and many a spell as well.

As he passed a darkened ally, he thought for a moment that he saw something moving, something human-ish, somthing of power. Cautiously, he started to intone a spell, willfully sacrificing part of his sanity to construct a shield around himself. The colors of the glimmering power were not of the normal human view of the universe, but of a twisted one, one that defies the human senses from fully comprehending them.

Pausing for a moment before continuing on he shudders at the glimps of the true nature of the universe that he had to face to cast his spell.

The woman chuckles darkly at this mad man's vain attempts to protect himself, yet something about him peeked her curiosity. He had obviously knew that she was there, something no normal man would have ever known. She slowly drops the shadows that brush agenst her and peer out at him with her amber eyes. She speeks slowly, her voice was this and smooth like pure black velvet, and heavily accented. "What torrments you so, my dear? What shadows hunt your mind and fill your heart with fear?"

"You among other things, and most of those are better left unnamed." He said quietly as he looked at her with his cold, steel grey eyes. "You think me mad, well most do. Now, as I am a gentleman, I tell you that I am called Jamis." He smiles in an odd way, relishing the fact that even the creatures of the night don't know the truth.

She chuckles as she stepped from the shadows. She was tall, almost 6', slender yet muscular, with and angular face typical among Gypsies, yet her skin was as smooth and white as pure marble. She wore a black sleevless dress, corset as the top with a long full skirt. Her amber eyes shine and sparkle agenst the night, almost making them seem as if they glowed faintly. She smile widely, flashing her small fangs for a brife moment. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Jamis. I have had many names through the centuries, but you may call me Karie, and you needn't fear me, at least not any more. You are too fasinating a man to make a meal out of."

He smiles grimly "You would not want to drink my blood, the three last of your kind to do so went quite insane. They made your Mad bloodline seem normal. Come walk with me, for you are... interesting, quite unlike many of the others of your kind that I have met." He gestured with his slim hand, for her to join him, a twisted flow of colors washed over his hand as he moved it, seeming to be absorbed by the heavy material of his coat.

She watches the colors with intrest as the danced over his skin, then vanished. She smiles and falls into step next to him. "You needn't worry about me love, unlike most of my kin, I'm old enough that I no longer truely need the blood to servive. However if I go longer then a year without feeding the hunger will slowly drive me insane."

"That is very rare, there are not that many who survive that long. But it is nice to know, I have enough problems as is, I don't need to deal with a completely and utterly insane vampire." He pauses for a moment and shudders before continuing, "Things are waking up. Things older than ether of our species. Haven't you felt the night twisting? Being pulled out of its normal shape?"

She nods at his word, her eyes taking on a far away look. "I have, there are a few others, older then I, who have felt it as well. We are scattered through out the world, trying to find the sorce of this...twisting, this distortion." She chuckles for a moment. "Though I never would have guessed that a human would know more about it then us of ancient lands."

"I am far older than I look. But I also have an advantage, I dream." gesturing to an apartment window with its lights out he continues "Listen, can't you hear the restless movements of those sleepers, movements fueled by fear? That is how those THINGS are touching the world at the moment, they have much more influence on the world of dreams than on the physical world, for now..."

Even in the waking world there minds are still troubled by dark things, though the images I get when I drink are but flashes, brife moments of the darkness they feel. I have also see the crime rate climb, which makes much easier hunting for me, for I will only feed on the Evil Doer."

"That is a very good thing to hear, as I am not one." he said with a grin, stopping in front of an apartment building he continued to say "If you would like to come in, you may." As he used a key to unlock the front door. Absently he said "I like the fact that I am the only person in this building, I don't have to worry about too many people getting hurt when the things that come after me show up."

"The only ones still alive are not sane anymore, they weren't able to deal with the things that occur around me. And well, as for the rest, it is better not to say how they died." he said shaking his head sadly. "Please follow my steps exsactly, and don't touch the left hand rail, It would be a very bad idea. I have this place rigged up to deal with para-natural beings."
